The check dam stabilising water level of the Vistula river to help secure the supply of electricity for Warsaw

Enea Wytwarzanie wants to secure the work of the Kozienice Power Plant, at the same time maintaining the involvement in stabilising the electricity system of the country in the periods of peak electricity consumption. It requires a construction of a check dam stabilising water level of the Vistula near the power plant. The company has obtained all the permits required by law and started the construction.

The check dam that will stabilise water level is necessary due to the hydrological drought persisting for the last several years. The amount of water in rivers has been at its record low for a long time. According to specialists, this summer the low level of water and its high temperature might paralyse the work of major Polish power plants. Some of them operate in the so-called open circuit cooling system, in other words they require water supply from a local river or water reservoir. The Kozienice Power Plant belonging to Enea Wytwarzanie requires water from the Vistula for its efficient work.

Last Summer we all learned that the heat may impede electricity production in our country. Here at Kozienice we do our best to minimise such risks and provide continued energy supply to the National Power System at the required level. The construction of a check dam to stabilise the level of water of the Vistula near the Kozienice Power Plant is necessary for the people of our country to be able to sleep peacefully, secure in the knowledge that we make every effort to supply their households, workplaces and hospitals with electricity – said Wacław Bilnicki, the president of Enea Wytwarzanie.

The Kozienice Power Plant endeavours to ensure that the investment is concluded this Summer when high temperatures increase power consumption, at the same time impeding its production. The investment is being executed in compliance with the law, environmental protection requirements and in cooperation with competent state and local authorities. Pursuant to the contents of applicable arrangements with competent administrative authorities the check dam stabilising the water level of the Vistula will not cause any disturbance that would impact the quality of environment. The construction of the check dam stabilising the water level of the Vistula will affect the navigation of this river section. Enea Wytwarzanie has offered extensive assistance to the organisers of mass events.

We all reap the benefits of the Vistula. The river provides for canoeists, fishermen and nature lovers. But thanks to the Vistula and the power plant benefiting from its nearness millions of Polish people have electricity and the sense of security. Our common objective is to use the Vistula in a responsible, sustainable and well thought-out manner – adds W. Bilnicki.

The Kozienice Power Plant belonging to Enea Wytwarzanie is a key electricity producer and second biggest power plant in Poland. It is responsible for production of energy consumed by every tenth Pole. The power station fulfils the highest environmental criteria. Its high efficiency, state-of-the-art technology and multibillion expenditures on pro-environmental investments mean that electricity production at the Kozienice Power Plant impacts the environment much less that the majority of such plants in Poland.
